The Blood or The Juice? (6/1/94)

One of the most tragic & bizarre scenes in the history of live television was played out for millions last week as O.J. Simpson led a parade of police cruisers on a long, slow, suspenseful drive through Los Angeles. I don't know about you, but I found myself riveted to the unfolding drama. Would he suddenly make a run for it? Would he begin firing at police? Would he take his own life? Would some unsuspecting motorist do something stupid? Would some of the dozen or so helicopters following him bump into each other?

Now, of course, we know how it ended, & each night the news chronicles for us O.J.'s odyssey through the justice system. But whether guilty or not, it's obvious he's a miserable man. And if you can believe any of the stuff coming out of the media, his personal life has been "pit-city" for a long time.

Just more sad evidence that one thing money can't buy is happiness. The Proverbs writer put it this way a long time ago: "Better a little with the fear of the Lord than great wealth with turmoil." (15:16)

Probably the only difference between O.J. & alot of us is that our worlds disintegrate much more quietly. No hovering choppers document our turmoil & transmit it live to the masses. But whether public or private, all who sacrifice what can't be bought for what can't satisfy, will one day experience their own version of O.J.'s saga: dead-end, defeat, surrender, shame, guilt, regret.

The Blood or the Juice: how will you live?
